Oh Holy Night ~ Tea Light Box Card

Hi everyone,
After my successful milk carton filled with chocolate that ended up being a gift for my son's teacher, I was thinking about a gift idea to give someone who can not or does not like chocolate and I came across an awesome project on Pinterest and I thought, I can make that!!
The picture I originally saw was this one and it inspired me to make a tea light box card to give to my neighbours this Christmas. There was no tutorial and no dimensions so I went ahead and made it up as I went.

To make a card base

Cut your card stock down to 8" W x 5.5"H.

Along the long edge, score @ 3.5" and 4.25"
The card will be 5.5" H.

Next, cut 3 panels of pattern paper to 3.5" W x 5 2/8" H.
I used the gorgeous angel pattern from the Oh Holy Night Collection by Echo Park

You will also need 2 thin strips at 3/8"W X 5 2/8" H.
These are the inner and outer spine coverings.

Adhere your paper panels to your base card and part of your project is already done!

By the way, I ended up leaving the back of the card plan Kraft card stock.
I wanted to be able to stamp my "Handmade with love" sentiment there.

To make the box

Cut your pattern paper to 7.25" W X 5"H.

Along the long edge, score at 0.5", 3.5" , 4" and 7". You will be left with a 0.25" strip. This is the bit you adhere tape / PVA glue to. (P.S. Please note I make an error in the measurements up on the screen on the video. I say 6.5" but it is 7").

If you are using odd sized tea lights, you will need to measure across the width of them (my 2 tea lights were 3.0" W, and just under 0.5" tall so I calculated:
3" + 0.5" + 3" + 0.5" - I then needed to add an extra 0.25" to adhere the box closed.
Follow this guideline when you are measuring your tea lights.

Here I marked the score lines in pencil for your convenience but you do not have to do this in your own project.

Along the short side, you will score @0.5", 1.5" and 5.5".

Thats one score line along the bottom and 2 score lines along the top.
I want you to be aware of the orientation for your pattern.
The bottom will be closed while the top will hinge open and closed like a functional box.

Next it's time to create an opening (you could always leave it a closed box and surprise your guest).

I used a rectangle die-cut ...

...and sent it through my big shot.

Next, cut an acetate piece to 2.75" x 4"H ..

.. and adhere it to the inside of the panel, pretty side up.

Next, add some PVA glue to that 0.25" strip

.. and fold it over to meet with the other side of the box.

Burnish well.

You should be at this stage.

Remember to have the one score line at the bottom.

And cut 4 little slits at the side of box to create the little side flaps.

Apply PVA to the little flaps and double sided tape along the appropriate areas of the large flaps and burnish your box closed.

Now to the top hinging flap.
Remember this top part has 2 score lines.

Cut a slit at each of the corners all the way down to the second score line...

and take off that complete front panel.

Remove the 2 little boxes up to the first score line on both sides.
Then slit the remaining little section down to the second score line to create the little flaps like you did for the bottom of the box.

You should now be able to push these 2 little flaps down like this.

Next you can fill your box with lovely scented candles.

To adhere my box to the card base I used combination of double sided sticky tape and PVA glue.

On the left hand side, I decided to create a pocket which I could put a tag in to write my sentiment on.

The dimensions of the pocket are:
4" W X 3" H.

Score along the long edge @ 0.25" and 3.75" W
Score along the short edge @ 2.75" H

Next you need a panel of pattern paper @ 3 3/8" W X 2.5" H.
Adhere this to the pocket, then use a 0.5" circle punch to create a little thumb notch.

Lastly, cut your self a tag for your sentiment.
I layered my tag and decorated it with the Christmas Gem Ribbon from the Kit as well as made myself a confetti star border for the fun of it :)

Lastly, it's time to embellish. I used the Noel embellishment pack from Kaisercraft to add an angel die-cut on the pocket.

And a plain white panel to break up the season's greetings sentiment with a nest of gold thread hidden underneath it on foam tape on the front.

Here's my card front :)

And here's how it looks on the inside.

Here are a few variations.
